The Flags 4 Freedom flag display, celebrated with patriotic programs and ceremonies, is created by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers. This event is well suited to families, military personnel, veterans, individuals, businesses, and community citizens. Everyone is invited to stop by during the week of July 4th to view an astonishing display of patriotism and community pride.
In 2006, the first-ever HEALING FIELDĀ® in the State of Kansas was hosted in downtown Merriam. Over 1,200 flags were placed, and thousands of visitors visited the display over the three-day event. A patriotic program and vintage warplane fly-over was conducted on the 4th of July. In 2007, Shawnee volunteers joined the Merriam group. Each year, the two communities have increased the number and duration of the flag display -- there is now a full week of special events and concerts.
Carol Eubank, President of the Merriam Parks, Recreation, and Community Foundation and Chair of the 2011 Flags 4 Freedom Steering Committee: "We are pleased to host our 6th annual event. Please support your community as a volunteer, sponsor, and/or attendee by joining us between June 25th and July 5th at the Merriam Marketplace for an evening band concert, the patriotic program and band concert on July 4th, and/or your own time of quiet reflection in the flag field."
Lanny Bachtle, 2008 & 2009 Flags 4 Freedom Event Chair and Merriam Parks, Recreation, and Community Foundation Board Member: "This event has been well received in our communities. Rather than a typical fireworks display, it is our honor and privilege to host an event that pays tribute to those who defend and protect our freedom."
All proceeds from the Flags 4 Freedom event will benefit the Merriam Parks, Recreation, and Community Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization created in 1988. The Foundation supports City of Merriam parks, recreation facilities, and programs. Fund raising proceeds directly finance: youth and adult program scholarships, purchases of equipment and a new gym floor for the Irene B. French Community Center, purchases of original works of art for city buildings, sponsorships of the Music at the Marketplace Summer Concert Series, and the support of the community center art gallery.
